Practice Focus and you Get Better at It

Amazing discovery! I have been practicing focus and have got much better at shifting my thoughts to where I want them to be.

I tried this "focus focus" stuff ages ago when I read some meditation things, and went to meditation classes and I practiced looking at a rose for 10 minutes and trying to clear my head of all other thoughts and becoming aware of only the rose....didn't do much for me to be honest.

What HAS done a lot for me is focusing on things like cleaning: focusing on the floor whilst mopping, focusing on the ingrained bits of dirt on an oven dish, focusing on getting a mark off the mirror and I have noticed whilst I am doing this that I can focus on just that one thing, and nothing else.

So I expanding it a bit. Focusing on my daughters face, my daughters little toes, my daughters eyes - focus, with no other thoughts.

I have also taken a liking to watching Dr House, which I have always always appreciated, but now it's on every day on SKY Atlantic (7pm!) - and it's very engaging and I can forget literally the whole world and focus on it.

My work: I can focus now, without other thoughts interrupting.

ANTS! Wow - ants are magic: you can stare at them all day if you wanted to and just watch them work.

And so the newly gained wisdom that I am here to share is that training your brain to focus and discard unwanted thoughts is very very very possible - and if, like me, the rose, is not helping you right now: try other things to practice on, and come back to the rose to see if it has helped at all.

I think I will try the rose again next week - see if my activities to date and been useful enough for me :)

Failing that: there are always pots and pans and floors to clean!
